New Building on the Way

The Mercer Carnegie Public Library District is announcing plans to construct a new facility in Aledo. The location will be at the corner of 5th Avenue and East Main Street. The property was purchased by the District in September, 2017 for $20,000 from Compeer. Plans for the new Library by the architectural firm apace of Peoria were accepted by the Library board in October, and funding was finalized in November. Construction costs are estimated at $1 million dollars, with half coming from savings, donations, and memorials, and the remainder from alternative revenue bonds paid over 20 years. The Library board has no plans to levy new taxes to pay for the building.

It is anticipated that bids will be let next Spring, with construction beginning by early summer, and completion late in 2018 or early 2019.  The new facility will be approximately 4,400 square feet, one story, and fully handicapped accessible. Fund raising for non-construction expenses, including shelving and furniture, will begin immediately.
